No, I am not expecting. The thought has crossed my mind, but I always get over it quickly. However, my sister is having her first baby is January. This has caused me to stop and think about the things that a first time mother needs. So, my question for all of you out there is two parts. First, what did you buy that you wish you wouldn't have wasted your money on and what item would you not have been able to live without? I look forward to all you insight. Thanks for the help! Comment away, please!!

Blankets large enough to swaddle and a baby carrier were my happy friends . . . I'm going to have to think back about what I didn't need though . . .
Totally needed (with Lucy who had trouble nursing): "My Brest Friend", although I wouldn't have bought it on my own. My lactation consultant trained me with it in her office so I had to buy one to take home!
Also needed: MORE SLEEP!!! Still do, but sorry hunny- money can't buy that!
Didn't need: Boppy, wrist rattles, single stroller- go straight for the double!
Could not live without my BOBBY! Love that thing. You and your mom gave me a basket full of baby wash, powder, lotion. That was a dream to get it all together at once. It was the bedtime lavender. I truly believe it does help calm. Also don't think you can have too many burp cloths. Especially the cute ones that make all the mess cleaning a litte bit more fun.
Could have done without the baby tub and pacifier / bottle stuff.
Let's see- swing was a MUST. I didn't have an electric pump with my first, but really came to appreciate it with child #2. We never really used a changing table. Diapers are easily changed on the floor without the worry of the baby rolling off.
Annika - two things I couldn't have gone without:
1) Swing!!! They now have some that plug-in as well as run on batteries - thank God. Too bad my "babies" were too old for them when they came out.
2) My new native baby sling we used this with Spencer until about three months ago! We gave it to his sister in Utah. She's on #6. www.newnativeinc.com.
Could've done without:
Billions of toys!!! Both my boys picked a fav and the rest sat unused!
Tell your sis I said hello!
Someone already took mine, but I second the "Brest Friend" nursing pillow as far as things I couldn't live without. Sariah was a really fussy newborn nurser and I couldn't have managed without 2 hands free. As for things I didn't need.... I loved all of the little dresses we got, but I only dressed Sariah up for Church (with the spit-up and diaper blow-outs, it wasn't otherwise worth it) and so she wore some dresses once or not at all before she outgrew them.
I can't believe your sis is having a baby!! Tell her congrats for me!
Let me see, things I really used:
Baby swing, and mine all prefered the cradle side-to-side over the traditional front/back
Big receiving blankets for swadeling.
burp rags/ cloth diapers. Boy can babies spit up!!!
Lanolin if she plans on nursing. So wonderful for that initial soreness
The open bottom sleeping gowns, soooo nice to not have to worry about snaps/zippers in the middle of the night!
Gas drops for baby! saves on sleepless nights if baby has gas problems.
Things I could have done without:
Diaper Genie, what a waste of money
baby bath tub, I never actually used mine.
vibrating baby seat, mine never liked them and prefered the swing.
Thank you guys so much for all your comments. Keep them coming!
I love my boppy pillow! However, our baby walker is a waste of space and money.
